If your eyes have become dry and scratchy, and your vision is intermittently blurred, you may be suffering with dry eye. Dry eye can be particularly troublesome in winter weather. At Cheaha Eye Associates, our Waldo eye doctors, Dr. David H. Pickrell and Dr. Patrick Brian Pyron, will be able to diagnose whether or not you are experiencing problems from dry eyes.
Whenever you have any type of vision change or disturbance, it is important that you come in to see our Waldo eye doctor to make sure that the cause of the problem is not one which needs immediate attention. Dry eye in and of itself is not a very serious eye condition. However, it can go on to cause permanent damage to the cornea if left untreated. This is because the cornea can become scratched by constant irritation due to dry eye. Dry eye is particularly troublesome in the cold winter weather. When you have dry eye, and are exposed to cold winter winds, this can definitely make your dry eye condition worse. It is recommended that patients who have problems with dry eye wear sunglasses whenever they are outside to help minimize wind exposure. The cold winter air is also extremely dry. In addition, your home or workplace may have gas forced air heat which is also extremely drying. Dry eye can be easily diagnosed by our eye doctor during a comprehensive eye exam. If you have very mild dry eye, you may be able to simply use over-the-counter tear solutions. However, in mild to moderate cases of dry eye, our optometrist will most likely prescribe prescription eye drops or oral medicines to help with the quantity and quality of tear production. In the most serious cases of dry eye, eye surgery can be performed which permanently closes the tear ducts and will help tears stay in the eyes longer.
